I just got my hair cut and the receptionist gave me a compliment on it. That's pretty cool. No one seems to give compliments anymore.

At my work we had a couple sexual harassment mandatory training sessions that were born from people not understanding something like "Hey, I like your jacket" is a harmless compliment, not some attack.

Compliments have been systemically removed from the workplace.

Chivalry isn't dead -it's been sued into submission.

That is possibly the saddest thing I have ever heard.

What did they teach you in these sessions? That these were harmless or that this was harassment?

It mostly depends on who you're talking to.

Both pretty much.

There was some general "Harmless compliments are harmless, don't jump to conclusions and take them for what they are" slides, but then there was stuff like "Some people will take things way beyond your intention so protect yourself and say nothing that can even in the most radical of interpretations even have the appearance of impropriety".

I'm suddenly concerned about what you consider "chivalry" if it's been grounds for legal consequences...

Know a bodyswapper? We can trade so you can have all the unwelcome "compliments" I get on a regular basis, and I'll take the nice comments about your hair.

Hahaha, I was teasing, but if you can get a sexual harassment write up for complimenting someone's jacket - we're all in trouble any how.

I have a feeling that so many of the people complaining in this thread have no idea how hard and intimidating it is to actually file a report and have any sort of disciplinary action taken, even with witnesses and proper documentation of the harassment. It's not like people are being fired willy-nilly over casual conversation. From the sounds of it, there were no writeups in the jacket situation, just a review of policy for everyone.

I'm sure, I haven't checked the comments since my original chivalry joke (which really was a joke btw) and I don't think I want to hearing your response.

I'm sure it's immensely difficult and intimidating to file a report like that in the work place, from what I've heard it's hard enough to file one with the police. Victims of (real, not jacket related) sexual harassment and assault are typically treated as the suspect and get interrogated simply by filing a report. They get treated like the criminal before the police (or at work HR) even start to question the person making them feel uncomfortable.

I just said it the other day - there's no excuse for someone making you feel uncomfortable at work.
